Personality Identification
"Over the sixty years since its inception in 1943, the MBTI or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ® has evolved and been perfected through continual test research and development of ever more accurate questions. Many, many millions of people have taken the test (actually the Indicator is an inventory or psychological instrument rather than a test - as a test suggests right and wrong answers. All answer choices in the MBTI are equally desired). The MBTI research data base is huge. The subtle enhancements to recently released "M" edition of the inventory was the product of a landmark normative study involving thousands of people and over two years of work by a team of experts in the field of psychometrics (psychological testing). " As a past CEO, my formal study has been devoted to the humanities(theology, philosophy, sociology, and education), counseling psychology, and management. (I now know why I was attracted to these disciplines and why the questions I raised to seek meaning was nothing I could avoid. My personality type is ENTJ and was validated again by using the abbreviated survey on Link #2). Through my formal training in these areas leading to a doctorate of philosophy degree, I was never really exposed to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator based on the research of Carl Jung. I do recall briefly coming across Carl Jung in the area of psychoanalysis when we were introduced to Sigmund Freud in a personality theory graduate course. Aside from that, my own independent study led to more in depth review of Jung's thoughts leading to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Kiersey Temperament battery. I, along with a team of ten staff members, were able to meet David Kiersey, the co-author of the book, Please Understand Me, in a workshop held in Indianapolis, Ohio and sponsored by the Center for the Application of Psychological Type (CAPT). I sincerely believe the administration of this personality inquiry ought to be used widely in all dimensions of one's life which overcomes prejudice and discrimination through self-understanding. As a certified administrator of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I became transformed to view the awakening of personal growth in others as they mastered the richness of this theory through use of a well founded battery. As a former school superintendent, we had collected 3 years of research utilizing student achievement to teacher style based on personality type that was ready for publication. We were discovering that students placed in classrooms with teachers of the same type were producing higher student gains. (See, the cover feature article "The Application of Type in Education" in October 1989 of AASA School Administrator magazine). Unfortunately, as the local school board changed, we were forced to discontinue our research of psychological type in our school district and the statistics of this study were never completed. Besides the use of the MTBI for adults, the student battery we used was the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Childen and Elizabeth Murphy, co-author of the instrument, was a trainer and consultant for our school district at that time. I have added additional links which allow you to self study this prominent personality battery with multiple links for further advanced study.
